2023 Avenger

46% Syrah, 19% Grenache, 13% Touriga Nacional, 8% Petite Sirah, 8% Carignan, 6% Mourvèdre
MAHA Estate, Kirk Landry, Adelaida Vineyard
It's hard to imagine this is the 23rd vintage of this wine. Historically Syrah based and full of flavor, complexity and pleasure. The 2023 Avenger is dark, delicious, and brimming with vibrancy, and addition of Touriga Nacional provides a more athletic build than years past. This varietal ripens at lower sugar with moderate acid, which is causing a lot of buzz here on the west side of Paso. A quality to consider with climate change.

The 2023 Avenger's deep oxblood color transitions to intoxicating aromas of blackberry, sandalwood, earth, and smoked meats. The palate is lush and persistent, conjuring notes of black fruits, grilled plums, jamón, and wild herbs. This one is a BANGER! Built for the long haul, but ready to enjoy now with a couple of hours in a decanter. Drink 2026-2046

“More Syrah-dominated (46%) and blended with 19% Grenache, 13% Touriga Nacional, 8% each of Carignan and Petite Sirah, and 6% Mourvèdre, the 2023 Avenger shows a deep ruby/plum hue along with classic Syrah darker berry fruits, black pepper, cedary herbs, and iron. Aged 18 months in French and Hungarian oak (53% new), it’s pure and polished on the palate, with a multi-dimensional mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish. Drink this legit awesome stuff over the coming decade or so. Drink 2025-2035.”

“The 2023 Avenger lulls you in with a rich blend of cherry and plum sauce, sweet sage and contrasting notes of olive and smoked meats. Silken and dense upon entry, it shows remarkable balance, as fresh acidity guides savory red and black fruits across the palate. The finish is staining and incredibly long, with edgy tannins that resonate, further enhanced by a hint of licorice and clove. Bury this in the cellar. Powerful yet tightly wound in its youthful state.”
