One Time Spaceman (or “Spaceman” for short), is a SLO County alternative rock band that dabbles in Blues, Punk, Jazz and Americana. The band features members of Rancho Deluxe (Alt. Country), Functus (Avant-Funk) and Zongo All Stars (Cali-Cubano), but has a unique rock, blues and psychedelic sound. While the original compositions are riff based rock songs that all clock in around 3 minutes, it is not unusual for the group to meander into a cross section of flavors reminiscent of Wilco, Zappa, Radiohead or The Dead Weather. One might hear modern noise swell in and out of covers by Bob Dylan and The Velvet Underground, while their healthy tube-saturated backbone should please any Black Keys fan. Guitarist Jacob Odell is as adept at playing explosive Hendrix or Albert King style guitar as he is playing hypnotic licks ala John Cale or Johnny Marr. Bassist Dylan Johnson is commonly referred to as a “monster” among local musicians and is ideal for Spaceman’s “non-formula” formula, lending fearless authority to the groups rhythm section and low end. Out of all of the Spacemen, drummer Chandler Smiley is easily the best versed in college and indie rock, with Deerhoof, Melt Banana and Wolf Parade in his list of favorite bands. His appreciation of samples and loops inspired him to build a custom set of electronic drums (in addition to his regular kit) for maximum creative mayhem and adventure. Singer and guitarist Mark Adams rounds out the group, and while he counts the Dead Kennedys and Pixies as all time favorites, he is a huge fan of Lefty Frizzell and is a formidable acoustic and electric guitarist whose songs have been in network television shows and on radio stations internationally (“Bones” on Fox and Sirius Outlaw Country to name a few). Adams’ guitar rig features vintage tape delays and analog effects that warp his Americana influences and help define the band’s original sound. The band has a full-length studio debut which is unreleased, but you can catch their act live at select venues on the central coast.
